"Murders, rapes and other incidents are reported on news channels all day, but if they are dramatic, it becomes unacceptable."

Mere Pass tum hoo

2020 proved to be a great year for Pakistan's television drama industry, despite the global Korona epidemic, and many dramas that differed slightly from traditional mother-in-law disputes and focused on other aspects of society have become popular.

However, it was also a difficult year for the imposition of a complete blockade in March, which led to the suspension of the filming of several dramas, which harmed producers and disrupted some of the television dramas at the time. The replay of the drama in Pakistan began in mid-June, and many unfinished dramas were completed in this way.

These four months have caused great dissatisfaction among those involved in the drama industry who work at the locations of these dramas for a daily salary.

However, 2020 will certainly be remembered in the sense that Pakistan's electronic media regulator (PEMRA) has tried to play its role a little harder this year by banning three TV dramas instead of one or two. On the other hand, some other dramas have been published for reasons.

In the first month of this year, a written lawsuit was filed in Sindh's Supreme Court against the most popular ARY Digital series, Mere Paas Tum Ho. And by portraying her in a negative role, an attempt was made to distort women's society and also to prevent the broadcast of the last episode of this drama. In his context, drama chief Humayun Said and director Nadim Beig and PEMRA were also summoned, but their request to stop the last series was rejected and the case was later rejected.

Remember that the story of the drama "Mere Paas Tum Ho" was written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, who remains in the news because of his controversial statements, and it was the story of a woman who abandoned the wealth of her husband and children. Go with someone else. On August 28 this year, PEMRA issued a press release calling on private channels to reconsider their drama scenarios and align them with "Pakistani values."

"Ishqia" and "Peyar k sadqy"

Since this press release, PEMRA has stepped up its opposition to the dramas and banned them. PEMRA said in a press release that the public is demanding a ban on these dramas because they run counter to our social and religious values.

Piyar K sadqy

However, PEMRA did not reveal why it slept for 27 weeks and how social values would be preserved by the current retransmission ban. Immediately after the two dramas were banned in the same month, PEMRA banned another ARY drama, Jalan. Until then, 13 series of Jalan have appeared.According to a statement issued by PEMRA, "many things in the drama are against religious and social and have received complaints in this regard. ARY Digital has been repeatedly warned to reconsider the content of the game and bring it into line with Pakistani values."

According to PEMRA, on August 18, it sent a letter to all Pakistani television channels, which contained instructions for the production of dramatic material in accordance with Pakistani values. The office said the ARY's management had not taken any significant steps and that the drama had subsequently been banned as a last resort.

Although the court later lifted the ban, the ban provoked a sharp reaction from many social media groups based in Pakistani dramas, and PEMRA called the practice "moral police."The drama series "Piyar k sadqy" is a story about a young and innocent girl who is harassed by her stepfather, while the protagonist of the movie "Eshqiya" marries his sister out of revenge when his girlfriend's marriage is resolved elsewhere. dramatic series 'Jalan', a girl divorces her sister and marries a man for wealth.

Fitrat

Last week, PEMRA also released a "tutorial / guide" to Geo's "Fitrat" drama, in which it opposed some of its dialogues. It should be noted that in some social media posts where his mother-in-law looks at his wife, Sally's brother-in-law has been criticized as "dating," but it's important to note that all dramas have been very popular and seen. and appreciated by a large number of people.

Pakistani drama

Regarding the banning of Pakistani dramas by PEMRA, Sultana Siddiki, president of Hum TV, said that PEMRA should not ban any drama on the basis of certain letters or e-mails, but should set up a committee for this purpose. This problem needs to be addressed. He said reports of murders, rapes and many other incidents spread throughout the day, but if the drama was recorded, there were objections that were only twofold. He said it was difficult to say whether or not the number of television viewers had increased during the global coronary epidemic, as Pakistan's rating system was quite outdated.

Regarding the trend since 2020, when television dramas are shown in cinemas, he said that the range of one or two dramas is good, or there is one game and a long performance in cinemas, but it is better. That movies are shown in cinemas. .

George Face, CEO of ARY Digital, The Independent of Urdu, said PEMRA needed to change the mechanism for dealing with drama-related problems because of a report that regularly appeared on the news channel when it contained drama. He contradicts it. is very strange.

He said PEMRA had received complaints because there would be some objections from social media and other sources, but banning the drama on some minor objections was not appropriate and should be reconsidered. According to him, the Pakistani media is very responsible and has not created any drama that is incompatible with society. He added that it was good that the court had lifted such a ban, as such restrictions had a serious impact on the creative process. Has the number of TV viewers increased this year as a result of the global Corona epidemic and the resulting blockade? In this context, he said that people now have a lot to watch and only games that are standard are popular. "Blocking has led to an increase in TV viewers, but the real reason is better quality dramas. Digital platforms have also seen an increase of more than 10%, probably due to the fact that many people work from home and the use of digital channels has increased significantly

In 2020, the dramas ISPR Ahad Wafa and the dramas ARY Raswai and Nand also caught the attention of Pakistani television, but PEMRA did not give them color.
